While looking for more friction setting for the old Petzl Pirana, I came across a way to turn the descender into a ventral poing ascender / progress capture mode.
This set me to investigate what other rappel devices can be used in this way:
SRM: Self Rescue Mode
Turns out some do. The initial friction setting matters to both achieve an optimal bend angle on the host carabiner to create capture and not to create too much friction when you are ascending.
If your device supports SRM, this is a very handy way to perform quick self rescue maneuvers, and avoids removal/installation/removal/reinstallation during conversions.
Only seek this mode if you have taken self rescue instruction, and are cognizant on:
The criteria for 2 points of contact that matches the gear that you intend to use during self rescues
The procedure to transfer load from one system to another, to perform conversions.
The acceptable fall factor for the rope and safety tethers that you intend to use for self rescue.
Rappel devices on SRM are not a replacement for a high efficiency PCD (Progress Capture Device) in your tool box.
